Howard) Subject: An idea for DC Software? To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu I encourage folks who can't afford other computers to buy the ST. Most of them end up with one floppy drive, no HDD. We'd like to be able to boot a disk, copying everything on it to a RAM disk it creates, all done automatically on bootup. Then we could run that program from RAM. RAMSTART for the Mac does this. It takes just as long to load it to the RAM disk and then run it, as it does to run it from the floppy; but then in using the program you have the extra speed. Having a user-selectable drive name, or else defaulting to drive A:, would make it useable with fussy programs like Timeworks DTP. Please don't comment with "why dont you buy a hard drive/pagestream/etc." There are a lot of people in the world who can't afford a small fortune for a computer, much less adding harddrives. The ST is ideal for them; excellent service from 1 disk drive, even with a TV set. Thanx for your time and consideration. Lauren Howard, Chief Potentate ACCCHU! This happens often enough that I fear it constantly and am loathe to spring for PS 2.*. I've also found it very troublesome to import text from WordWriter.. the kerning seems odd, and can't be changed. Does anyone else experience this, or do I have some systemic problem??? As it stands now, I know nothing about Calamus, but I sure want to learn. ------------------------------ Date: 13 Jul 91 15:16:22 GMT From: noao!ncar!asuvax!cs.utexas.edu!usc!rpi!uwm.edu!zaphod.mps.ohio-state.edu!unix.c is.pitt.edu!gvlf3.gvl.unisys.com!tredysvr!cellar!darling@arizona.edu (Darling) Subject: DTP for music ? Hi, Pete. I use C-Lab's NOTATOR, which is outstanding. The new version, 3.1, finally incorporates all the font and layout capabilities you'd ever need. However, it's neither shareware nor cheap (about $500), probably because it also includes the world's greatest sequencing software. ~ darling@cellar.UUCP \\\ Thomas Darling * record production * dance re-mixing uunet!cellar!darling \\\ Fact HQ Studio * The Cellar BBS:215/336-9503 * FACT v ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jul 91 12:25:26 WET DST From: "Ian McCall (Scorpion)" Subject: For Sale: Spectre 128 To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu Well, I've had a Mega STE on order for quite some time now, and finally saw the machine on Friday. I cancelled the order the same day, and am now buying a Macintosh LC. Reasons? Well, despite the 16Mhz 68000, according to the benchtest program Quick Index, the BIOS actually came out as being slower than on my nearly five year old STFM. The hard drive handling is appalling - name another machine where you have to press a key before it recognises the hard drive (yes - I -know- you can wait for around ninety seconds, but that is simply unacceptable). I can't. Also, the hard drive fan is fairly noisy, it certainly irritated me after using it for a while. All this plus the current rumours of yet another DMA cock-up has convinced me that, taking a long term view, I'd be wasting my money if I sank it into Atari anymore. I've been a faithful fan of the ST for some time now, and would -still- choose one over a Mac Classic, but I have to think of the future of such a large investment, and long term I don't see one. The net result of this is that I have the Spectre 128 Mac emulator for sale, preferably to a UK buyer - but as they buyer will pay postage I'm prepared to send it anywhere. No ROMs, I'm afraid, but there's a list of sources if you need them. I'm asking sixty-five pounds, which is what it cost me, so I'm not trying to rip anyone off. Meanwhile, I bid you all a fond farewell. I've enjoyed my ST years, and it's taken me further than I expected to go, but current circumstances dictate that it's time to go.
